The DV 2020 Program
The Diversity Visa Lottery Program was created by the U.S. government almost 30 years ago. Its purpose is to bring in more immigrants from countries and territories that have a low rate of immigration into the U.S. Hence the name Diversity Visa.
A “low immigration rate” means that a country or territory contributed less than 50,000 immigrants during the previous five years.
The U.S. Department of State decides each year which countries are eligible for the Visa Lottery.
You Win A Chance
IF you are Selected you do NOT get a Green Card right-away. What you win is the chance to apply for one. The requirements for U.S. Permanent Visas must still be met. For a Diversity Visa there are additional requirements regarding education and/or work-experience, self-sufficiency.
The U.S. State Department expects over 17 Million people worldwide to enter in the DV 2020 Program. Out of that number around 100,000 Entrants will be selected.
The number of available Diversity Visas is the same every year: 50,000.
Also no country may receive in one year more than 7% of the Diversity Visas.
It is possible that not all Selected Entrants (Winners) who submit a Visa Application will indeed receive a Green Card.
