What is the DV Green Card Lottery ?

The Diversity Visa (DV) or Green Card Lottery is a program of the US Government.
Participants can enter the lottery for free. If selected they are allowed to apply for a Diversity Visa. If the Visa is indeed issued they become Legal Permanent Residents. The Visa is also called Green Card.

For this year’s Lottery (DV-2022) 55,000 Diversity Visas are available.

When and where can I enter the Visa Lottery ?

The Entry Period for DV-2022 started Wednesday, October 7, 2020. It ends at 12.00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10, 2020 (EST). After this date/time you cannot submit an Entry Form anymore.

To enter you must go to the official eDV website

Can anyone enter ?

No. To be eligible for the Visa Lottery you must be born in a country that does not already contribute a large number of immigrants through other programs. e.g. family-related or based on work. (There are only two exceptions to this rule through alternate chargeabiliy.)
Your current citizenship is not important.

This year people born in the following countries can NOT participate:
Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (incl. Hong Kong)*, Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and dependent territories, Vietnam.
*People born in Macau SAR and Taiwan are eligible to participate.

How do I know if I won ?

By doing the Entrant Status Check to see if you were selected.
Go to dvlottery.state.gov

You will need your Entrant Confirmation Number.
If you lost the number you can retrieve it on the eDV site. Go to Entrant Status Check, click on the blue line of text and submit your information. (You then need the e-mail address you gave on the Entry Form.)

If you participate in this year’s Visa Lottery you must wait till next year (2021) to see if you are selected. Entrant Status Check (ESC) for DV-2022 starts on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at 12.00 p.m. (EDT). Status Check is not possible before this date/time.

Can I still enter DV-2021 ?

No. The Entry Period for DV-2021 is closed.

Entrant Status Check for DV-2021 is currently possible on the eDV website.

I received an email inviting me to enter the 2022 Visa Lottery.

The US Government does not license businesses to offer Visa Lottery services. Using a commercial agency does not give you a better chance to get a Green Card. No one can guarantee you a win.
Any business, agency or organization can call themselves “official” and use an official looking seal or stamp to sell services.

Why is the current Visa Lottery called DV-2022 ?

Because the visas are officially issued in 2022.

If I win do I get a Green Card right-away ?

No. You win a chance to apply for a Green Card. You must submit a Visa Application and successfully complete the Visa Procedure that follows. After you arrive in the US your Immigrant Visa becomes a Green Card.

If I win can I bring my spouse and my children ?

Yes, you can bring your spouse. He/she can also submit a Visa Application, based on your win.
You can bring a child/children if they are unmarried and still under 21 years of age (when the visa is issued).

I got a phone call that I won !
I received a letter I that was selected !
I was sent an email that a relative had won !

The US Department of State does not contact DV-Lottery participants to let them know that they won. It does not contact relatives of winners. Any such email, letter, phone call is a scam.
The State Department does not publish lists of winners in previous DV Lotteries.
